Dixie Howell Marquee

Howell returned to the majors with the White Sox in 1955 and delivered his best season. He went 8-3 with nine saves and a 2.93 earned run average across 35 relief appearances. At the plate he collected eight hits in 21 at bats for a .381 average.

Six seasons gave him a 19-15 record, 19 saves, 99 strikeouts and a 3.78 earned run average in 226 innings. He started only two of his 115 appearances and never completed a game. As a hitter he had 18 hits and five home runs in 72 at bats.

Cleveland brought Howell up for three games in 1940. Nine years passed before his next major-league appearance, one game for Cincinnati in 1949, and six more before the White Sox stint. He remained with Chicago through 1958 and died in 1960, at forty.
