Pittsburgh brought him up as an outfielder and he played 102 games there in 1954, hitting .239. The bat was not enough. He went back to the minor leagues, learned to pitch, and came back at thirty to spend fifteen seasons in bullpens, mostly Baltimore's.

Nineteen seasons gave him 93 wins, 68 saves and a 3.32 earned run average across 1,259 innings. He walked 1.4 men per nine innings, which is among the best rates anyone has, and pitched in four World Series for the Orioles, winning the 1966 and 1970 ones.

He had a degree in economics from Swarthmore and worked as a certified public accountant in the offseasons and for thirty years after. His delivery was described by everyone who saw it as a man falling down stairs. He died in 2023, at ninety-two.
