He led the American League with 42 saves in 2000, and in 2002 he moved to the rotation and went 21-8 with a 2.58 earned run average. Only Dennis Eckersley and John Smoltz have also had a 40-save season and a 20-win season, and both of them went the other way around. He threw a no-hitter that April, against Tampa Bay at Fenway Park.

In October 2004 he won the deciding game of all three rounds — the Division Series, the Championship Series and the World Series — for a Boston club that had come back from three games down to the Yankees and then ended an eighty-six-year wait. He had been left out of the rotation to start that postseason.

Seventeen seasons across seven clubs gave him 176 wins, 157 losses, 86 saves and 2,671 innings at a 4.03 earned run average. The sinker was the whole method: ground balls, few strikeouts, and durability, with at least 32 starts in ten straight seasons. He got no votes in 2019.
