He went 20-5 with a 2.56 earned run average for Tampa Bay in 2012 and won the American League Cy Young Award, and led the league with 271 strikeouts two years later. Fourteen seasons gave him 157 wins against 82 — a winning percentage of .657 — with a 3.32 earned run average, 2,076 strikeouts and five All-Star selections.
He had lost nine consecutive postseason starts by October 2018, which was said about him constantly and which he did not deny. That month he won the deciding game of the Championship Series and two more in the World Series, including the clincher, and Boston won it. He was Comeback Player of the Year the same season.
Tampa Bay took him first overall in 2007 out of Vanderbilt and he was in the major leagues the following September, pitching in relief in the postseason as a rookie. He sat out 2020 and stopped after 2022. He is not yet on a Hall of Fame ballot.
