Davey Lopes played second base for the Los Angeles Dodgers for a decade before moving to Oakland, then finished his career in the outfield for the Cubs and the Astros, retiring in 1987.
He stole 557 bases, a total that places him among the game's most prolific base stealers of any generation, batting .263 with 1,671 hits over 1,812 games and scoring 1,023 runs.
He won a Gold Glove in 1978 and was a Sporting News All-Star in both 1978 and 1979, the strongest recognized stretch of a sixteen-season career.
His All-Star recognition came four times in all, spanning 1978 to 1981. He was born in East Providence, Rhode Island, on May 3, 1945, and batted and threw right-handed.
