The Dodgers' Longest-Running Infield

On June 13, 1973, the Los Angeles Dodgers started Steve Garvey at first base, Davey Lopes at second, Ron Cey at third, and Bill Russell at shortstop against the Philadelphia Phillies at Veterans Stadium. The Phillies won 16–3, an inauspicious start.

The four would go on to hold those same four positions together for more than eight and a half years, the longest a single infield combination has ever stayed intact in Major League Baseball. Garvey, Cey, and Russell each made multiple All-Star teams, and the group anchored Dodgers teams that won four pennants before finally breaking up after the 1981 season, the year Los Angeles won the World Series.

The record for infield longevity remains unbroken.
