Born February 27, 1896
Gloucester, MA, USA
Cy Perkins was Connie Mack's catcher through the Athletics' lean years and then lost the job, without complaint, to a younger man named Mickey Cochrane whom he had helped teach the position. Cochrane went to the Hall of Fame; Perkins stayed in the game for thirty more years as a coach.
He caught 1,171 games across seventeen seasons, nearly all in Philadelphia, and was still on the roster for the championship teams of 1929 and 1930 in a reserve role. Later he coached for the Tigers, the Yankees and the Phillies, where he was credited with the development of Robin Roberts.
Born in Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1896, Perkins batted .259 with 933 hits. Perkins died on October 2, 1963, at sixty-seven.
