In 1972 he saved 37 games with a 2.25 earned run average in 65 appearances, more saves than any pitcher had recorded in a season, and Cincinnati won the pennant. He was the Fireman of the Year and finished fifth in the Cy Young voting.

Fifteen seasons gave him 143 saves, 96 wins and a 2.94 earned run average across 1,353 innings and 731 games. Eight of the seasons were with the Reds, for whom he pitched in four World Series and won the 1975 one.

He was from Alabama, one of eleven children, and had been a starter in the Braves' organization before Cincinnati bought him in 1968. He was called Hawk. Two writers' ballots gave him one vote and then none.
