Chuck Klein Marquee Hall of Fame 1980

In 1930 Klein had 250 hits, 59 doubles, 40 home runs, 158 runs and 170 runs batted in. That was the middle of five seasons in Philadelphia, 1929 through 1933, in which he hit 180 of his 300 career home runs and collected 1,118 of his 2,076 hits, in 759 of his 1,753 games.

He won the Most Valuable Player award in 1932, when he led the National League in hits, home runs, runs and stolen bases. In 1933 he took the Triple Crown, the same season Jimmie Foxx took the American League's. Philadelphia then traded him to the Cubs, and he never again hit more than 25 home runs in a season.

Much of the peak was built in the Baker Bowl, whose right-field wall stood close enough to reward a left-handed pull hitter, and how far to discount it has been argued ever since. He hit four home runs in a game at Forbes Field on July 10, 1936, after the trade. He died in 1958 at fifty-three, and the Veterans Committee elected him in 1980.
