Charlie Grimm Marquee

b. August 28, 1898 · Philadelphia Athletics 1916, St. Louis Cardinals 1918, Pittsburgh Pirates 1919–1924, Chicago Cubs 1925–1936

Twenty seasons gave him 2,299 hits, 394 doubles, 1,078 runs batted in and a .290 average, twelve of them with the Cubs. He led National League first basemen in fielding percentage seven times.

He managed Chicago in three separate spells and won pennants in 1932, 1935 and 1945 — the last National League pennant that club won for seventy-one years. He took over in the middle of 1932 with the club in second and won it, and his 1935 side won 100 games and 21 in a row in September.

He was called Jolly Cholly, played the banjo in clubhouses and on the radio, and was among the most-liked men in the game across sixty years in it. His ashes were scattered at Wrigley Field. Twelve writers' ballots got him to 26 votes of 266 and twenty committees have considered him. He died in 1983, at eighty-five.
