On October 13, 1971 — the first World Series game played at night — he came in for Pittsburgh in the fourth inning and allowed one hit over six and a third, hitting three Baltimore batters along the way. The Pirates won that game and the Series, and he was twenty-one.

The hit batsmen were policy, not accident: 68 of them, and a reputation for pitching inside that opposing dugouts complained about for fifteen years. He went 18-8 for the 1976 Pirates and 11-3 with a 3.19 earned run average for the 1979 club that won another World Series.

Fifteen seasons gave him 115 wins against 88, a 3.66 earned run average and 1,809 innings. He scouted and coached afterward. He died of cancer in 2018, at sixty-eight. The 1991 ballot gave him no votes.
