Born December 31, 1971
Rockingham, NC, USA
He went 14-13 with a 3.90 earned run average for the 1998 Tigers, who lost 97 games. It was the best season anyone on that staff had. He started 30 or more games in three straight years for clubs that finished last or next to it.
On May 1, 1999, an umpire found a piece of sandpaper taped to the thumb of his pitching hand and threw him out; he was suspended for ten games. He said afterward that it had been there all season.
Fourteen seasons gave him 84 wins against 107, a 4.81 earned run average, 1,567 innings and 859 strikeouts. Shoulder surgery cost him 2004 entirely, and he came back to start 26 games for the 2008 Astros at thirty-six. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
