Cleveland traded him to Pittsburgh in November 1998 for Ricardo Rincón, a relief pitcher, and he then hit 39, 35, 37 and 38 home runs in four years, with 135 walks in the last of them. That trade is the one Cleveland supporters bring up first.

Fifteen seasons gave him 1,897 hits, 287 home runs, 1,078 runs batted in, 1,183 walks, 411 doubles and a .291 average. He led the National League in walks in 2005 for San Diego, where he spent his last seven seasons in a ballpark that took away what was left of the power.

Two All-Star selections in fifteen years, for a hitter who reached base more often than almost anyone of his time. The 2015 ballot gave him no votes at all. His brother Marcus played second base for Atlanta and was an All-Star in 2003.
