He led the National League in triples four times, in runs twice, in hits once and in walks once, and finished with 2,375 hits, 1,359 runs, 1,129 walks, 131 triples and 558 stolen bases. He was five foot ten and bunted about forty times a year, which is why he hit .290 without power.

In May 1996 he had a cancerous tumor removed from his tonsil and had thirty-two radiation treatments. He was back in the Dodgers' lineup on September 6 and got a standing ovation that stopped the game; he broke his hand five days later and came back again for the last week.

Seventeen seasons and one All-Star selection, in 1991. He won the Lou Gehrig and Branch Rickey awards in 1996. The 2003 ballot gave him two votes of 496.
