He started and won the first game of the 2003 World Series against the Yankees and won the fifth as well, at twenty-five, for a Florida club nobody had picked. Four years later, with the Dodgers, he went 16-4 with a 3.03 earned run average and finished third in the Cy Young voting.
Fourteen seasons gave him 121 wins against 101, a 4.29 earned run average, 1,925 innings and 1,273 strikeouts, with two All-Star selections. He threw very hard and had shoulder trouble from 2008, which is when the rest of it turned into a tour of seven clubs.
Arizona drafted him and traded him to Florida at twenty-one in the deal for Matt Mantei. He came back at thirty-six for a last season with the Marlins. The 2020 ballot gave him one vote of 397.
