He caught more games than all but seven men, won Gold Gloves in 2001, 2002 and 2006, and made one All-Star team. He was traded four times and each time the club getting him wanted the same thing: a catcher who ran a pitching staff and would not embarrass anybody at the plate.
Eighteen seasons gave him 1,579 hits, 270 doubles, 607 runs batted in and a .251 average. He caught for Houston for nine years, including the 2005 club that reached the World Series, and finished with the Dodgers at forty-one.
He took his degree from Dartmouth in government while playing, which he did over eight off-seasons. He managed Detroit from 2014 to 2017 and the Angels in 2019. The 2016 ballot gave him no votes out of 440.
