Bob Wickman Marquee

He lost the tip of the index finger on his pitching hand in a farm accident as a child in Wisconsin, and the grip that resulted put movement on the ball that nobody taught him. He saved 267 games in fifteen seasons with a 3.57 earned run average, and led the American League with 45 in 2005, at thirty-six.

The Yankees brought him up in 1992 and traded him to Milwaukee in 1996, and he closed for Milwaukee, Cleveland, Atlanta and Arizona after that. His 139 saves for Cleveland are third in that club's history. Two All-Star selections, both after he turned thirty-one.

He was heavy and threw sinkers and got ground balls, which is not the shape of pitcher the job usually goes to. He has never appeared on a Hall of Fame ballot.
