Billy Herman Marquee Hall of Fame 1975

b. July 7, 1909 · Chicago Cubs 1931–1941, Brooklyn Dodgers 1941–1943, 1946, Boston Braves 1946, Pittsburgh Pirates 1947

In 1935 he had 227 hits and 57 doubles, both National League highs, and the Cubs won the pennant. He hit 57 doubles again the following year. He led the league in triples with 18 in 1939, and he was an All-Star in every season from 1934 through 1943, ten in a row.

Chicago traded him to Brooklyn early in 1941 and the Dodgers won the pennant that season. He played on four pennant winners, the Cubs of 1932, 1935 and 1938 and those Dodgers, and none of them won the World Series. Navy service then took 1944 and 1945 out of his career.

He returned in 1946 at thirty-six, played parts of two more seasons for Brooklyn, Boston and Pittsburgh, and finished with 2,345 hits, 486 doubles, 1,163 runs and a .304 average in fifteen seasons. He played 1,812 games at second base. The veterans committee elected him in 1975.
