Born March 22, 1926
Concord, NC, USA
In 1950 he played 45 games in the outfield, 27 at third base, 21 at first, five at second and one at shortstop, because that is where the injuries were, and he hit .354 in 424 at bats — the best average in the American League. He finished second in the Most Valuable Player voting to Phil Rizzuto.
Sixteen seasons gave him 1,691 hits, 299 doubles, 669 walks and a .300 average exactly. He played 624 games at second base, 406 at first, 330 at third and 111 in the outfield, and was an All-Star twice.
Chicago had him for four years and he was on the 1959 club that won the city's first pennant in forty years. He finished with the expansion Houston club in 1962 at thirty-six, managed in the minor leagues, and died in 1984 at fifty-eight. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him.
