His eyesight was bad enough that he wore thick glasses on the mound, which no pitcher did then, and he was waived by two clubs in one month in 1936 before Chicago claimed him. The following June he threw Bill Dietrich's No-Hitter against the St. Louis Browns.
Sixteen seasons gave him 108 wins against 128, a 4.48 earned run average, 2,003 innings, 92 complete games and 17 shutouts. His best year came in the war: 16-17 with 36 starts for the 1944 White Sox at thirty-four, and 12-10 with a 2.80 earned run average the year before.
He pitched eleven of his sixteen years in Chicago and finished where he started, with the Athletics, in 1948. He was a Philadelphia man his whole life and worked for the city after baseball. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1978, at sixty-eight.
