He hit .324 in 1980, the best average in the National League, and had 2,715 hits, 498 doubles and 1,208 runs batted in across twenty-two seasons, with 201 hits in a season twice. He struck out 453 times in 9,397 at bats, which is a rate almost nobody has matched since.

Boston lost the seventh game two nights later. He had been playing on ankles that could barely carry him and had been left in the game rather than replaced with a defensive substitute.

He was booed for years, moved his family to Idaho, and came back to Fenway Park in 2008 to throw out a first pitch and was applauded for four minutes. The 1996 ballot gave him ten votes of 470. He died of dementia with Lewy bodies in 2019, at sixty-nine.
