Born November 22, 1985
New York, NY, USA
He struggled to throw strikes for years in Colorado, then had the best stretch of his career with the Yankees in 2019: 6-5 with a 1.90 earned run average and 88 strikeouts in 66 innings. He signed there as a free agent after seven seasons in the thin air of Denver, where a breaking ball is supposed to flatten out and betray a pitcher.
Sixteen seasons gave him 41 wins, 46 saves, 744 innings and a 3.48 earned run average across 727 appearances, all but three of them in relief. He struck out more men than he pitched innings for his career, on the strength of a slider that came from a low arm angle few hitters saw anywhere else.
He grew up in Brooklyn rooting for the Yankees and pitched for them, the Mets and the Red Sox in a five-year stretch, working all three New York-area rivalries from different sides. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
