Cuban Stars of Havana
The Cuban Stars of Havana toured the United States for ten seasons from 1906 at a recorded 134-127, playing white semi-professional and Black clubs wherever a game could be arranged. Tinti Molina managed for most of it. The figures rest on surviving box scores and cover a fraction of the games.
José Méndez pitched here and is the reason the club is remembered: in 1908 he beat a touring Cincinnati major-league team and gave up almost nothing across several exhibitions against major-league opposition that winter, which is the performance that made the case, to anyone paying attention, that the color line was not about ability.
Cristóbal Torriente also played here. Both are in the Hall of Fame, elected in 2006 with fifteen other figures from the Negro leagues and Black baseball. The club continued as the Cuban Stars West in the Negro National League from 1916.
