Willie McGee

Willie McGee Marquee

b. November 2, 1958 · St. Louis Cardinals 1982–1990, 1996–1999, Oakland Athletics 1990, San Francisco Giants 1991–1994, Boston Red Sox 1995

St. Louis traded him to Oakland on August 29, 1990 while he was hitting .335, which was the best average in the National League. He had enough plate appearances to qualify and nobody caught him, so the league's best average belongs to a man who spent September in the other one. He hit .274 for the Athletics over the same weeks.

He was the Most Valuable Player in 1985 with 216 hits, 18 triples, 56 stolen bases and a .353 average, and he had won a World Series with the Cardinals three years earlier, hitting two home runs in one game of it as a rookie. Eighteen seasons gave him 2,254 hits, 352 stolen bases, 94 triples and a .295 average, with three Gold Gloves and four All-Star selections.

He ran with a bent-over gait that made him look older and slower than he was, and the crowd in St. Louis regarded him with an affection reserved for very few players. He came back to the Cardinals for four seasons at the end. Two ballots gave him 26 votes and then 12.
