Willie McCovey

Willie McCovey Marquee Hall of Fame 1986

b. January 10, 1938 · San Francisco Giants 1959–1973, 1977–1980, San Diego Padres 1974–1976, Oakland Athletics 1976

He played only 52 games as a rookie in 1959 and won Rookie of the Year anyway. Across twenty-two seasons he batted .270 with 2,211 hits, 521 home runs and 1,555 runs batted in, led the National League in home runs three times and in runs batted in twice, and drew 137 walks in 1970.

For years the Giants had Orlando Cepeda at first base and pushed him out to left field. His best season came in 1969, when he hit 45 home runs, drove in 126, and took both the Most Valuable Player award and the All-Star Game award. He led the league in home runs and runs batted in that year and in walks the next.

San Francisco traded him to San Diego after the 1973 season and he came back in 1977, at thirty-nine, to be named Comeback Player of the Year. The Hall of Fame elected him in 1986, his first year on the ballot, with 346 votes of 425. The water beyond the Giants' right-field wall carries his name.
