Will Clark Marquee

b. March 13, 1964 · San Francisco Giants 1986–1993, Texas Rangers 1994–1998, Baltimore Orioles 1999–2000, St. Louis Cardinals 2000

His first major-league at-bat, in April 1986, was a home run off Nolan Ryan in the Astrodome. Fifteen seasons gave him 2,176 hits, 284 home runs, 1,205 runs batted in, 937 walks and a .303 average, with six All-Star selections, two Silver Sluggers and a Gold Glove.

He led the National League in runs batted in and walks in 1988 and in runs in 1989, and was the most valuable player of the 1989 Championship Series. The swing itself was admired to a degree that outlasted the numbers, and hitters of the era name it when asked.

He finished at thirty-six, hitting .345 in his last season across two clubs, which is not how most careers end. The writers gave him 23 votes of 520 in 2006 and he came off the ballot after one year; two committees have looked at him since.
