Wally Joyner Marquee

b. June 16, 1962 · California Angels 1986–1991, Kansas City Royals 1992–1995, San Diego Padres 1996–1999, Atlanta Braves 2000, Anaheim Angels 2001

The Angels let Rod Carew go and gave first base to a twenty-three-year-old in 1986, and he hit 22 home runs, drove in 100 and was voted onto the All-Star team by the fans as a rookie. The section behind first base called itself Wally World. He hit 34 home runs the next season with 117 runs batted in, and never hit more than 21 again.

Sixteen seasons gave him 2,060 hits, 409 doubles, 204 home runs, 1,106 runs batted in, 833 walks and a .289 average. He finished second to José Canseco in the 1986 Rookie of the Year voting with 12 first-place votes.

He left for Kansas City as a free agent and had four steady years there and four more in San Diego, where he hit .327 in 1997. He admitted in 2005 to having tried steroids briefly in 1998, before any rule against them. The 2007 ballot gave him no votes at all.
