Van Mungo pitched for the Brooklyn Robins and Dodgers for a decade before finishing his career with the New York Giants, retiring in 1945.

He went 120-115 with a 3.47 earned run average, completing 123 of his 259 starts and throwing 20 shutouts across 2,113 innings pitched. He struck out 1,242 batters over that span, a strikeout rate ahead of many of his contemporaries.

Five All-Star selections came his way, four of them consecutive between 1934 and 1937 and a fifth in his final season, 1945.

A right-handed pitcher and hitter, he came into the world in Pageland, South Carolina, on June 8, 1911, and lived until February 12, 1985, several decades after his playing days had ended.
