Turkey Stearnes Marquee Hall of Fame 2000

Sam Crawford also led his league in triples six times, and no one else has. Stearnes did it in 1923, 1924, 1925, 1927, 1934 and 1936, and led in home runs in 1924, 1925, 1928, 1931, 1939 and 1940 — sixteen years between the first and the last. He also led twice in runs batted in.

Across eighteen seasons from 1923 he had 1,334 hits, 189 home runs and 998 runs batted in over 999 recorded games, batting .348, which is eighth-highest of anyone with 2,000 at-bats in a league now counted as major. He played 1,027 games in the outfield and was chosen for five East-West All-Star games.

He worked in a Detroit foundry after he stopped playing and died in 1979, largely unremembered outside the city. The Veterans Committee elected him in 2000. Major League Baseball recognized the Negro Leagues as major in 2020, which is why the titles above are league titles and not a separate list.
