He saved 358 games — fourteenth on the all-time list — with a 3.17 earned run average across 708 innings and fourteen seasons, and was chosen for four All-Star teams. He closed the last game of the 2002 World Series for Anaheim, which is the only title the franchise has won.

He was drafted as a catcher and hit .203 in his first professional season. The Angels moved him to the mound in 1991 on the strength of the throwing arm alone, and he was in the major leagues four years later, throwing in the high nineties from a delivery that finished with him falling toward first base.

Ten of the fourteen seasons were with the Angels, for whom he saved 316 games, more than anyone else has. The writers gave him four votes of 549 in 2015 and he came off the ballot after one appearance.
