Tom Tresh Marquee

b. September 20, 1938 · New York Yankees 1961–1969, Detroit Tigers 1969

He played shortstop in 1962 because Tony Kubek was in the Army, hit 178 hits with 20 home runs and 93 runs batted in, won the Rookie of the Year award with 13 of the 20 votes, and then hit .321 in the World Series the Yankees won. He was moved to left field the next season when Kubek came back.

Nine seasons gave him 1,041 hits, 153 home runs, 550 walks and a .245 average, with two All-Star selections and a Gold Glove in left field in 1965. He was a switch-hitter with power from both sides — 26 home runs in 1965, 27 in 1966.

A knee he wrecked in spring training in 1967 took the rest. He was traded to Detroit in 1969 and retired that winter at thirty-one. His father Mike Tresh caught twelve seasons for the White Sox. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 2008, at seventy.
