He pitched seven seasons for Toronto and was in the rotation for both championship clubs, and his father Mel Stottlemyre had won 164 games for the Yankees and later coached the staffs that won four more titles. His brother Mel Jr. pitched briefly as well.
Fourteen seasons gave him 138 wins against 121, a 4.28 earned run average, 2,191 innings and 1,587 strikeouts. His best year was 1998, when he went 15-9 between St. Louis and Texas, and he won 14 for Arizona in 1999.
A shoulder tear in 2000 cost him almost all of the last two years of his career. He won the Lou Gehrig and Branch Rickey awards in 2000 for work away from the field, and has written and spoken about his brother Jason, who died of leukemia at eleven. The 2008 ballot gave him one vote of 543.
