He won the Cy Young Award in 2008 at twenty-four and again in 2009, and led the National League in strikeouts three years running with 265, 261 and 231. He was five foot eleven and threw from a delivery his father designed, with a stride longer than his own height, which every pitching coach who saw it said would not last.
It lasted about five years. From 2012 his earned run average was above four and San Francisco moved him to the bullpen for the postseasons, where he was excellent: the club won the World Series in 2010, 2012 and 2014, and he pitched in all three. He also threw two no-hitters against San Diego, in 2013 and 2014.
Ten seasons gave him 110 wins against 89, a 3.74 earned run average, 1,682 innings and 1,736 strikeouts, with four All-Star selections. Hip surgery ended it. The 2022 ballot gave him nine votes of 394.
