Ontiveros returned to Oakland in 1994 after three seasons away from the majors and posted a 2.65 earned run average across 115 innings. He went 6-4 in 27 appearances, including 13 starts. In 1995 he moved fully into the rotation, went 9-6 in 22 starts and made his only All-Star team.
Ten major-league seasons gave him a 34-31 record, 19 saves, 382 strikeouts and a 3.67 earned run average in 661 innings. He started 73 of his 207 appearances, completed six games and threw two shutouts. His longest uninterrupted run was four seasons with Oakland from 1985 through 1988.
Ontiveros pitched for Philadelphia in 1989 and 1990, Seattle in 1993 and Oakland again in 1994 and 1995. Another four-year major-league absence followed before three final appearances for Boston in 2000. The sixteen years between his first and last games contained only ten seasons on a major-league mound.
