Born March 10, 1958
Pontiac, MI, USA
He saved 17 games for the 1980 Dodgers and took the Rookie of the Year award with 80 points of 120. He pitched in four games of the 1981 World Series that Los Angeles won. In 1983 he had a 1.44 earned run average and 18 saves and missed weeks of the season in treatment; the commissioner suspended him for all of 1984.
There were seven suspensions in all across a decade, and a lifetime ban in June 1992 that an arbitrator overturned five months later. Between them he kept getting people out: a 1.68 earned run average for the 1991 Yankees, 15 saves and a 1.80 in 1994.
Twelve seasons gave him 47 wins, 91 saves, 606 innings and a 3.03 earned run average across 497 appearances, none of them starts. He was released in 1996 at thirty-eight. He died in 2006 when his pickup truck rolled over in California; he was forty-eight, and the coroner found methamphetamine in his blood.
