Steve Gromek Marquee

Doby hit the home run that won that game 2-1 and Gromek pitched the complete game, and in the clubhouse afterward the two of them were photographed cheek to cheek, laughing. The picture ran in newspapers across the country in October 1948 and is one of the images of integration that year; Gromek was asked about it for the rest of his life and said he had won a World Series game and hugged the man who made it possible.

Seventeen seasons gave him 123 wins against 108, a 3.41 earned run average, 2,064 innings and 92 complete games. He was 19-9 with a 2.55 in 1945 and an All-Star that season, and went 18-16 for Detroit in 1954 at thirty-four.

He was from Hamtramck, Michigan, and went home to it. The 1964 ballot gave him one vote of 201. He died in 2002, at eighty-two.
