Socks Seibold Marquee

b. May 31, 1896 · Philadelphia Athletics 1915–1917, 1919, Boston Braves 1929–1933

Seibold pitched for the Philadelphia Athletics from 1915 through 1919, then spent nine full seasons outside the majors. He returned with Boston in 1929 and, a year later, carried a 251-inning workload. He went 15-16 with a 4.12 earned run average and completed 20 of 33 starts in 1930.

Nine major-league seasons gave him a 48-86 record, five saves, 296 strikeouts and a 4.43 earned run average in 1,063 innings. He started 135 of his 191 appearances, completed 64 games and threw eight shutouts. Most of those innings came after his long absence.

Seibold followed his largest season by going 10-18 across 206 innings in 1931, including three shutouts. His last two years brought smaller workloads, and he finished with the Braves in 1933. At the plate he collected 76 hits and one home run in 395 at bats. He died in 1965, at sixty-nine.
