He played right field for the 1919 White Sox, the club that threw the World Series, and he was one of the honest ones — he refused to associate with the players involved and told reporters so at the time. He had played on the 1917 club that won it honestly, too.

Sixteen seasons gave him 1,687 hits, 310 doubles, 133 triples, 747 runs batted in and a .264 average, with 1,343 games in the outfield and 368 at first base. He hit .264 or better in most of his sixteen seasons, a steady rather than a spectacular hitter.

Boston had him for his last five years, and he managed the Red Sox in 1931 and 1932, finishing 111-198 for clubs with little talent. The 1937 ballot gave him one vote of 201. He died in 1955, at sixty-nine.
