San Francisco traded him to Pittsburgh in 2001 in the deal for Jason Schmidt, and he went 6-13 with a 6.50 earned run average in 2004 and was out of the majors after 2006. He pitched in Japan for the Hanshin Tigers and the Orix Buffaloes for three seasons and in the minor leagues for one more.
San Francisco signed him again for 2011 and he made 28 starts, went 13-7 with a 2.71 earned run average and was chosen for the All-Star team at thirty-three. He went 14-9 the following year and won two games in the postseason for the club that won the World Series, and won another ring in 2014.
Twelve seasons gave him 61 wins against 75, a 4.48 earned run average, 1,190 innings and 900 strikeouts. A pitch broke bones around his right eye in 2016 and he came back from that too, at thirty-eight. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
