The Gold Glove began in 1957 with one award per position across both leagues, and the shortstop it went to was McMillan. The award split by league the next year and he won the National League's in 1958 and 1959 as well. He played 2,028 games at the position and almost none anywhere else.
He hit .243 across sixteen seasons with 1,639 hits and 68 home runs, and finished sixth in the 1956 Most Valuable Player voting with three first-place votes — for a shortstop who hit three home runs that year, which is a measure of what people thought they were watching in the field.
Cincinnati had him for nine years, Milwaukee for four, and the Mets for the last three, where he stayed on as a coach and managed the club for the end of 1975. Three writers' ballots gave him single digits and three committees have looked at him since. He died in 1997, at sixty-eight.
