Ron Reed Marquee

b. November 2, 1942 · Atlanta Braves 1966–1975, St. Louis Cardinals 1975, Philadelphia Phillies 1976–1983, Chicago White Sox 1984

He was six foot six, played forward for the Pistons across two winters in the middle 1960s while pitching in the summers, and gave up the basketball when the pitching turned into a career. It lasted nineteen years: 146 wins, 140 losses, 103 saves and a 3.46 earned run average across 2,477 innings.

He won 18 games for the Atlanta club that won the division in 1969 and was a starter for a decade. Philadelphia got him at thirty-three and put him in the bullpen, where he spent eight seasons and pitched in the 1980 World Series the Phillies won, and then in another in 1983.

He was the winning pitcher on the night Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run, having relieved and held Los Angeles for six innings. One All-Star selection, in 1968, and no Hall of Fame ballot has ever listed him.
