Robin Yount

Robin Yount Marquee Hall of Fame 1999

b. September 16, 1955 · Milwaukee Brewers 1974–1993

He was eighteen years old and Milwaukee's starting shortstop on opening day 1974. Twenty seasons produced 3,142 hits, 583 doubles, 251 home runs and 271 stolen bases, and he led the American League in doubles twice and in triples twice. The 3,000th hit was a single against Cleveland at County Stadium on September 9, 1992.

In 1982 he led the American League with 210 hits and 46 doubles, won the Most Valuable Player award and a Gold Glove, and carried Milwaukee to the only World Series in the club's history. A shoulder that would not hold up moved him off shortstop after 1984. He won the award a second time in 1989, from center field.

Very little else about him drew attention. He was chosen for only three All-Star teams, and not in 1989, the second season he was voted the league's most valuable player. He played his whole career for a small-market club that reached the postseason twice while he was there, and he stayed anyway.
