Miller left Boston for California after the 1977 season and won an outfield Gold Glove in his first year with the Angels. He played 132 games in 1978, collecting 125 hits and scoring 66 runs. The next year he again had 125 hits and raised his average to .293.
Fifteen seasons gave him 1,046 hits, 161 doubles, 552 runs, 454 walks and a .269 average. He played 1,248 games in the outfield and only 10 at first base. His best home-run total was six in 1973, reinforcing a game built around reaching base and covering the outfield rather than power.
Boston brought him to the majors in 1971 and employed him through 1977. His three years with the Angels were the only interruption in a Red Sox career that resumed in 1981 and ran through 1985. Miller finished with 1,482 games across fifteen consecutive major-league seasons and never appeared on an All-Star team.
