Randy Velarde Marquee

b. November 24, 1962 · New York Yankees 1987–1995, 2001, California Angels 1996, Anaheim Angels 1997–1999, Oakland Athletics 1999–2000, 2002, Texas Rangers 2001

On May 29, 2000, playing second base for Oakland against the Yankees, he caught a line drive, tagged the runner coming from first and stepped on second. It was the eleventh unassisted triple play in major-league history and the first by a second baseman since Bill Wambsganss did it in the 1920 World Series.

He was a utility man for nine years in New York — 630 games at second base, 293 at third, 262 at shortstop, 112 in the outfield — and then, at thirty-six and thirty-seven, he had the two best seasons of his career: .317 with 200 hits between the Angels and Oakland in 1999, and .278 with 41 doubles the year after.

Sixteen seasons gave him 1,171 hits, 214 doubles, 100 home runs, 463 walks and a .276 average. He was named in the Mitchell Report in 2007, having been sold human growth hormone by a clubhouse employee. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
