He went 8-22 in 1974 for a San Diego club that lost 102, then 20-12 with a 2.24 earned run average in 1975 — the lowest in the National League — and finished second in the Cy Young voting with 80 points of 120. In 1976 he went 22-14 with 25 complete games, the most in the league, and won the award with 96 of 120 and 15 first-place votes.

He did it with a sinker and nothing else. He struck out 93 batters in 315 innings in his Cy Young season and walked 50, which meant every out came off the bat and most of them came on the ground. Ten seasons gave him 100 wins against 123, a 3.42 earned run average, 1,933 innings, 73 complete games and 19 shutouts.

A nerve injury in his pitching arm at the end of 1976 required surgery, and he went 6-12 the next season. He had one more good year, 13-14 with a 2.88 earned run average in 1978, and was out of the game at thirty-two. San Diego retired his number 35. The 1988 ballot gave him no votes of 427. He died in November 2025, at seventy-five.
