Choate's usage is captured by the gap between games and innings. He made 672 appearances but worked only 408 innings, and never started a game. In 2010 with Tampa Bay he pitched 85 times yet totaled 44 innings. He had made 74 appearances for Arizona in 2004.
Fifteen seasons gave him a 16-14 record, seven saves, 348 strikeouts and a 3.90 earned run average. He averaged about 0.61 innings per appearance across his career. Choate's career-high four wins came in 2010.
The Yankees brought him up in 2000, followed by four seasons with Arizona and two with Tampa Bay. He pitched for the Marlins under both their Florida and Miami names, then moved to the Dodgers during 2012. Three seasons with St. Louis from 2013 through 2015 closed his career.
