He rarely played against left-handed pitching and made the most of what he got against right-handers: .324 in 1984, .310 in 1987 and .300 in 1988, none of those seasons reaching 400 at bats. Toronto built division winners around players like him in the mid-1980s.

Sixteen seasons gave him 972 hits, 226 doubles, 445 runs batted in, 460 walks and a .272 average, with 730 games at third base and 206 at shortstop. He came up as a shortstop for California and Kansas City before Toronto turned him into a corner infielder.

He finished in 1992 at thirty-six, the year the Blue Jays won their first World Series, though he did not play in that postseason. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
