Washington signed him for six years and $140 million after 2018 and got the season it wanted immediately: 14-7 with 238 strikeouts, and in October three relief appearances including the seventh game of the World Series, where he pitched three scoreless innings and was the winning pitcher.
The remaining four years of that contract produced 6-19 with a 6.31 earned run average in 2022 and league-leading loss totals in 2021, 2022 and 2023. He kept taking the ball — 31 or more starts in each of those seasons — for a club rebuilding around him.
Thirteen seasons have given him 110 wins against 142, a 4.51 earned run average, 2,047 innings and 1,860 strikeouts, with two All-Star selections. He threw a slider more than half the time in his best years and hitters stopped missing it. He is still pitching.
