Oscar Stanage

Oscar Stanage Marquee

b. March 17, 1883 · Cincinnati Reds 1906, Detroit Tigers 1909–1920, 1925

Stanage's largest offensive season came for Detroit in 1911. He played 141 games, collected 133 hits, hit three home runs and drove in 51 while batting .264. The games, hits, home runs and runs batted in were career highs.

Fourteen seasons in all gave him 819 hits, 123 doubles, 34 triples, 321 runs batted in and a .234 average across 1,096 games. He caught 1,074 games, appearing only seven times at other positions. His playing time came from a demanding defensive job rather than his bat.

Cincinnati brought Stanage up for one game in 1906. He joined Detroit in 1909 and remained through 1920, then returned for three final games in 1925. That thirteen-season Tigers association accounted for all but his brief Cincinnati debut. He died in 1964, at eighty-one.
