He went 19-14 in 1904, 23-12 with a 1.88 earned run average in 1905 and 20-13 in 1906, when Chicago hit .230 as a team and won the World Series anyway on his pitching and three other arms. He led the American League nowhere in particular but was as good as anyone in the league those three years.

His arm gave out after that and he pitched only occasionally after 1909, mostly for Washington, where Clark Griffith kept him on the payroll as a coach and comic. He appeared in a game in most seasons through 1933, at fifty-seven, pinch-hitting once a year or so and drawing a laugh doing it, alongside his longtime partner Al Schacht.

Nineteen seasons gave him 83 wins against 75, a 2.65 earned run average, 1,514 innings, 128 complete games and 16 shutouts. He was in a major-league uniform across five decades, 1898 to 1933, longer than almost anyone. Eight ballots have listed him. He died in 1965, at eighty-eight.
